Prostate Cancer Facts
Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow out of control in the prostate gland. The cancer begins as a small tumor in the gland, spreading to local lymph nodes and then the rest of the body. With da Vinci, Goshen's Center for Cancer Care brings the latest technology and the highest quality of prostate cancer care close to home.
What is Prostate Cancer?
Cancers of the prostate gland are the most common cancer found in men. The American Cancer Society predicts 218,890 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2007. One in six men will be diagnosed during his lifetime, however, only one in 32 will succumb from the disease.
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located in front of the rectum, at the outlet off the bladder. The prostate is only found in men and the cancer tends to grow very slowly. Many older men who die from other diseases have been found to also have prostate cancer that they and their doctor were never aware of.
Still some prostrate cancers grow and spread quickly and even with today's advanced diagnostic tools it is often difficult to distinguish between slow and fast growing cancers.

Screenings/Prevention
One of the keys to treating prostate cancer is early detection. The American Cancer Society recommends that doctors give patients 50 and over in good health and expected to live at least 10 years a PSA blood test and digital rectal exam (DRE) once a year.
Men with higher risks, such as African-American men with a history of prostate cancer in their families, should be tested age 45 and older.

What To Expect
The anatomy around the prostate consists of muscles and delicate nerves that affect both bladder control and sexual function. During the removal of a cancerous prostate, a surgeon must work with great care to spare these very delicate structures.
With the da Vinci System, surgeons can receive a highly magnified, three-dimensional view of the prostate, surrounding muscles and nerves with unprecedented clarity. Since their hands and eyes are virtually extended inside the patient, they can now perform the most delicate procedures imaginable. The added control and precision provided by the da Vinci instruments assist the surgeon in preserving the anatomy surrounding the prostate. This may reduce the risk of incontinence or impotence.
During a da Vinci Prostatectomy, the prostate is cleanly detached and removed through a small incision. The bladder is then reattached to the urinary channel over a catheter, which is left in place for a short period of time to ensure proper healing. The surgery is completed when the instruments are removed and the small incisions are closed in the abdomen.
The da Vinci Surgical System is the only robotic-assisted medical system approved by the FDA, and has already been proven effective in thousands of prostate surgeries across the United States. As the least invasive form of prostate surgery available anywhere, you should be able to return home between 24 to 48 hours following treatment returning to your normal daily activities sooner.
