Employment Rights of the Cancer Survivor

GOSHEN, Ind. - For many cancer survivors, work fulfills a critical financial and emotional need. In addition to providing income and important benefits such as health insurance, employment can be a source of self-esteem and co-workers a source of support.

According to the The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS), though most employers treat cancer survivors fairly and legally, some survivors - as a result of an outdated personnel policy or an uniformed or misguided supervisor - can encounter problems such as dismissal, demotion, denial of promotion, denial of benefits and more. Survivors can best protect themselves from employment discrimination by learning how to advocate for their rights in the workplace.

On Feb. 26 Goshen Cancer Survivor Network will host a Lunch and Learn workshop on the "Employment Rights of the Cancer Survivor."  Guest speaker Dean Leazenby of Warrick and Boyn Attorneys at Law in Elkhart, Ind. will lead the discussion on how to avoid discrimination and enforce your legal rights as a cancer survivor. The event is from noon to 1 p.m. in the Arbor Conference Center, Birch Walnut Room, of Goshen General Hospital, 200 High Park Ave., Goshen Ind.
