Center for Cancer Care Breaks Mold with Integrative Approach
Goshen, Ind. - The Center for Cancer Care (CCC) began as a vision. Goshen Health System (GHS) recognized that locally, cancer patients did not have options for cancer treatment. GHS had a clear vision to build a cancer program with meeting the patients needs and improving the quality of treatment as the foundation.
"Typically a patient can be referred several times amongst medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists who may not be in agreement with each other regarding a treatment plan. This process can often take weeks and delay treatment", said Paulette Brown, Vice President of Hospital Operations.
The CCC recognized that a team response could help prevent delayed treatment. Twice a week medical, surgical, radiation oncologists, and naturopathic doctors meet in the cancer center to discuss patient variables. These variables may include the patient's diagnosis, family history, spiritual and physical needs, and special needs of individual family situations. The team then formulates a plan that they believe will be optimal for the patient. This integrative approach saves valuable time for the patient who otherwise would have to schedule appointments with each oncologist, and then coordinate treatment appointments pertaining to each oncologist's specialty.
This integrative care model includes a holistic approach that can strengthen the patient before and after surgery. Naturopathic medicine is used in conjunction with conventional treatments to better prepare patients for treatment and also to help them to recover. The Center for Cancer Care also provides patients professional counseling to help them deal with the stress and feelings that accompany a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Both individual and family counseling are available. In addition to counseling, a Living With Cancer Support Group is offered to provide support for patients as well as friends and family.
